"Hi, I'm just calling from Vodafone to let you know that your phone tariff bundle is going to increase in price by £10 per month from now on, effective today, as of the end of this call. This is due to unavoidable changes caused by decisions taken at management level regarding the price structuring of our contracts going forward. My name is Kevin, and I can assure you that if you wish to take out your understandable frustrations about this on me, I will apologise profusely, however I must advise you now that I am unable to make any changes to your contract whatsoever."

This is outrageous! I wasn't informed that this was happening!

"That's correct sir, the decision was made not to inform customers pre-emptively of the change. We apologise for the inconvenience."

Who can I complain to about this? You can't do this, I signed a contract.

"Yes, but all previous contracts have been annulled and replaced with new contracts, effective today. Sorry."

You can't do that! A contract is an agreement that you won't do that! It's a contract!

"That is correct, sir, so if you wish then we can cancel your contract now, effective the end of this call, and your phone will be immediately disconnected."

What? No! I need my phone. You have to give notice before you do this!

"You are correct, sir, there is a notice period, however due to the decision to implement new contracts effective today, we have been required to act in adherence to the new contracts rather the old contracts, so we are working now based on the new contract's notice period, effective today. Please accept our apologies."

I could sue you for this! This is breach of contract!

"You are of course welcome to pursue this matter through the courts, however I must inform you that if you state now that you intend to do this, that will constitute immediate cancellation of your contract, and I have been instructed to also inform you that the cost of pursuing such an action, will far outweigh any personal remuneration you might eventually receive. We are so terribly sorry."

What? So I can either agree to the higher price, or my phone won't work once you hang up, and then I have to take you to court?

"That is effectively your choice, sir, yes. Of course you don't have to take us to court, but your contract would be cancelled nonetheless. I would like to point out that our decision regarding price structuring is in line with emerging cross-market trends, so it is highly likely that, should you choose to cancel your contract with immediate effect, any comparable contracts you find with our competitors will have increased in price by a similar factor."

I hate phone companies so very, very much.

"Yes sir, that is a very common response. So should I cancel your contract with immediate effect, or would you like to stay with us, and as such agree to the new contract?"

I need to make calls later today, I can't be without a phone. And tomorrow, probably. *sigh* Yes, I agree to the new contract.

"An excellent choice, sir! Thank you for choosing Vodafone! Is there anything else I can help you with today?"

I picked Peter up from school just like normal. He was all happy to see me, laughing and singing some new song, waving goodbye loudly to his friends. We got to the car and I strapped him into the booster seat in the back, his legs kicking. Maybe I admonished him for making it harder for me than it needed to be. That's the kind of thing I do. We took off, and drove for a couple of miles, listening to his Peppa Pig songs on the car hi-fi, him singing along, sometimes replacing the lyrics with his own made up words. I sang along to the bits I knew, but I was concentrating on driving. We stopped at a traffic light not far from home. There was no traffic in front of us. As the lights changed to green, a woman walked out in front of the car, slowly and deliberately. From her posture she could have been lightly pregnant or a little overweight, aged anywhere between mid twenties and late thirties. She stopped in front of the car, glanced at me, then away to my left. As my eyes followed her...

I think they came up with the idea for fun, just throwing stuff around, but we ran with it and it ended up being maybe the sharpest weapon in our arsenal. Want to guess what it was?" No idea. Hit me. "Youtube comments." I guess you don't mean getting people to conduct top-secret conversations in the comments section. "Nope. Have a guess how we used them." I dunno... some daft code, like 'the sarcastic cormorant is in Grandfather's playpen'? Nah, you wouldn't bother telling me that. Maybe....
